Image of the month November 2025 -- Laguna Marano, Italy

published on November 18, 2025

The Marano Lagoon, located on the north-eastern Adriatic coast of Italy between the Tagliamento and Isonzo rivers, is a shallow brackish water system characterized by the interaction of river inflows and marine exchange. It consists of a complex network of channels, gullies and salt marshes where freshwater mixes with seawater, creating nutrient-rich conditions that are home to diverse communities of fish, shellfish and migratory birds. This dynamic environment also helps to buffer the coastline and maintain the ecological functions of the Ramsar-designated wetland complex. The hydrodynamic regime results in pronounced spatial gradients in water quality, influenced by fluctuations in suspended solids, chlorophyll and colored dissolved organic matter.
