Image of the month July 2026 -- Rio Tiéte, Brasil

published on July 22, 2026

The dammed Rio Tietê, in the interior of the Brazilian state of São Paulo, stretches across a branched network of flooded side valleys. The surrounding landscape is a patchwork of sugarcane fields and orange plantations on fertile Terra Roxa soils. Nutrient inputs from these crops, combined with untreated municipal wastewater, have driven the reservoir into a long-term state of eutrophication, producing a phytoplankton bloom visible as bright green swirls along the water's circulation patterns. Such algal blooms occur regularly here and are usually dominated by cyanobacteria; they develop when prolonged water residence times coincide with short periods of stable thermal stratification.
