Welcome to EnMAP

The German Spaceborne Imaging Spectrometer Mission

The Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program (EnMAP) is a German hyperspectral satellite mission that monitors and characterizes Earth’s environment on a global scale. EnMAP measures geochemical, biochemical and biophysical variables providing information on the status and evolution of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. More information about the main objectives and the status can be found on the mission page.

The planned schedule of upcoming priority acquisitions is available in the Foreground Mission

Campaign support for close-to-concordant EnMAP acquisitions can be requested by following the steps outlined on the Campaign Planning page.

  • Image of the month October 2026 -- Mines near Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)
    published on October 15, 2026

This EnMAP false-colour image shows Lubumbashi, the second-largest city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, close to the Zambian border. In this band combination, vegetation appears green, while the urban area, with its regular street grid, appears in beige, brown and violet tones. East of the city centre, the open pits, waste dumps and process ponds of the Ruashi and Étoile copper–cobalt mines are clearly visible, with further mining sites to the north-west and north-east of the scene. Narrow green bands of riparian vegetation follow the river network through the surrounding landscape. The region is part of the Central African Copperbelt, where copper and cobalt have been mined for more than a century. Hyperspectral data such as EnMAP can support the mapping of exposed surfaces in mining areas and the monitoring of land-cover change over time.

  • Instrument Planning Portal available again
    published on October 13, 2026

The scheduled maintenance of the EnMAP Instrument Planning Portal has been completed. The portal is available again on 13.10.2026, and users can log in and submit new acquisition requests, user registrations and proposal submissions.

  • Image of the month September 2026 -- Lago Trasimeno, Italy
    published on September 22, 2026

This EnMAP image shows Lake Trasimeno in central Italy, with its three islands, surrounded by a patchwork of fields and, to the south, by hilly, densely vegetated terrain. In this band combination, shades of purple and brown represent bare or harvested fields, while shades of green indicate vegetation. At about 124 km², Trasimeno is the largest lake in central and southern Italy, but on average it is only about 6 m deep. As a closed lake with no natural outflow, its water level varies with climatic conditions. The meso-eutrophic lake, whose eutrophication has been linked to agriculture in the surrounding landscape, is an important validation site for aquatic remote sensing applications.

  • Wildfires in Europe
    published on August 20, 2026

The extreme heat and dry conditions experienced across Europe in summer 2026 have led to numerous wildfires. EnMAP data can be used to assess fire severity to characterize the damage caused by these fires.

  • Image of the month August 2026 -- Île de Pam, New Caledonia
    published on August 13, 2026

The scene covers the northern end of Grande Terre, the main island of New Caledonia (France). Bright turquoise reef flats and sand banks surround Île Balabio in the north and the elongated Île Pam near the centre, while the Diahot — New Caledonia's longest river — opens into the mangrove-fringed Baie d'Harcourt in front of the dry-season hills of Ouégoa. In the upper right, the outer barrier reef marks the transition from the shallow lagoon to the deep water of the Coral Sea. The region is part of the UNESCO listed New Caledonia lagoon system.
